The Relay for Life Walk has been Walked

The Waranga Memorial Hospital 2006 Relay for Life team have done it!

Saturday may have been sunny but there was a blustery cold wind blowing - and the cold only worsened as the start time for the 2006 Relay for Life Walk to fight cancer got closer.

After the opening ceremony, cancer survivors with their carers walked the first lap to the encouragement of all the teams which would have their members continue the walk until midday on Sunday.

At 8 pm the candlelight ceremony took place with teams placing candles in front of their team tent to remember those who had lost the fight and those who were still fighting cancer.

As the night wore on, members of the Hospital team who were rostered to walk for an hour or two donned more jackets and winter clothes to battle the cold wind. It wasn't until an hour or two after sunrise that jackets and gloves could be removed and by ten o'clock or so the weather was warming up, perfect for shorts and t-shirt.

The team raised over $4,000 this year so thanks to those who supported the movie night, trivia quiz, the raffles and made a donation. Overall the Shepparton Relay for Life this year raised $285,000 and the event over the past few years has raised well over $1,000,000 for cancer research in Victoria.

Today's the day - the Guardian Angels have their wings on

The 2006 Relay for Life walk starts today and the Waranga Memorial Hospital team, the Guardian Angels, are set to go.

The opening ceremony is at 6 pm (Sat, Oct 21) and the team will have team members walking until midday Sun Oct 22.

The ceremony at 6 pm begins with the reading of the Relay for Life oath.

Then the first lap of the walk honours survivors of cancer (adorned with a red sash) who take to the track with their carers (wearing a green sash).

The candlelight ceremony follows. Candle tribute bags are placed along the edge of the track inscribed with personal messages and the candles continue to burn throughout the night to inspire the walkers.

3 Days to Go... The Guardian Angels are Ready!

The team is making final preparation for the weekend's walk - fitness levels are  just right, the roster is full so there'll be walkers for the whole 18 hours, the weather looks like it'll be more than pleasant for a couple of hours of walking by all team members, there's a tent or two just in case, sleeping bags have been taken down from the top of cupboards for those who'll be staying at Princes Park for the duration, team t-shirts have been screen-printed, and there are plenty of wings for the Guardian Angels.

    Away we go!

Shepparton News Article - More about Relay for Life

Below is an except from theShepp News Tuesday, September 12, 2006, that tells about the money raised by the Relay for Life event held in Shepparton.

After millions of steps from thousands of participants, the Shepparton Relay for Life event has been recognised for raising $1 million over four years.

Representatives of the committee received a special award at the annual Cancer Council conference earlier this month.

Committee chair Gwen Parsons said the group was given a glass trophy for the efforts of all the walkers who has taken part during the past four years.

The fundraiser for cancer research attracts a huge crowd every year and last year raised $335,000.

Trivia Night Announcement - from Waranga News of 31-Aug-2006

The following is the article published concerning the team's trivia night on Friday September 8:

Relay for Life Trivia Night on September 8

The next major fund-raising event to be held by the Waranga Memorial Hospital Relay for Life team will be a trivia night on Friday September 8 at St. Mary's Hall at 7.30 pm.

The Hospital team is entered in the Shepparton event to be held from 6 pm on Saturday October 21 to midday on Sunday October 22. Currently the team has more than thirty members so it won't be difficult to rotate different people to walk for the eighteen hours. As well some volunteers from Rushworth Community House want to take part.

Last year the event in Shepparton raised $335,000 from the 110 teams who participated. All this money is collected a week before the event so it's “real” money that goes towards research to find cures for cancer victims.

So make a contribution to the fight against cancer by supporting the Waranga Memorial Hospital's Relay for Life trivia night on September 8.

Tickets cost $10 per adult, $5 per child. Make up a table of eight and let the Hospital know on 5856 1501. Last year's winning table, Rushworth Community House, are gearing up again with a strong team so don't allow them successive championship status.

Pirates of Caribbean Movie Night a Success

Last night (Wednesday, August 23) there was a good turn up at the first major fund raising effort by the Waranga Memorial Hospital Relay for Life team.

Perhaps some people were hesitant to go out because there was some much-needed rain (about 7 mm fell in Rushworth according to an informed source).

Everybody certainly enjoyed Dead Man's Chest and the supper that was available at the interval and at the end of the night.

Lots of tickets were sold in the raffles - a trailer load of wood and a fruit bowl. Ticket in both these raffles will again be sold at the Trivia Night on Friday September 8 (haven't got your table yet? Organise a group of eight and try to make sure the Rushworth Community House team don't win successive nights).

Thanks to Ken and his team for the special showing of Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest at the Rushworth Shire Hall.

Trivia night- Friday Sept 8 at St Marys Hall

The Trivia Night is on Friday 8th September at St Mary's Hall. Get a group togethe for a table and enjoy the evening. The winners from last year, Rushworth Community House, will have a battle to defend their title. The night is BYO, $10 for adults, $5 for children. During the night ticket will be sold in a trailer load of wood. Start gathering together a group of friends and revising your general knowledge (and other knowledge, too, if last year's questions are an indication of what to expect this year ).

Movie night Wednesday August 23 - Pirates of the Caribbean

The first major fundraiser will be a movie night at the Rushworth Shire Hall on the evening of Wednesday August 23.

The movie for the night is Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest. Cost is $15 per ticket which includes a hearty supper. Start time is 7 pm.
You can get a preview of the movie at www.everythingpirates.com.au. If you want to help Jack Sparrow on his mission, have a talk with Billy Bones.

    First meeting

The first meeting to get things moving was held last Wednesday evening. It was generally agreed to confine the main areas of fund raising to a Trivia Night, as last year, and perhaps a Movie Night. Another main point to come out of the meeting was to use a roster for those walking so that people will only need to turn up for whatever length of time they'd like to take part in the walk.

    Yes, it's on for 2006

Early planning has started for a team to participate in the 2006 Relay for Life event. As well as members being recruited from staff at Waranga Memorial Hospital, there'll be some recruiting from the volunteers at Rushworth Community House.

    Relay for Life 2006?

The Team Captain is discussing with others about organising a team for the Relay for Life 2006. We'll await developments and give you the news when it comes to hand.

    The day after

    The walk is over.

How do we know? The muscles are aching... There are some stiff knees... Calf muscles are tight... Hamstrings feel like they might break at any minute... And there are the drooping eyelids...

A great achievement by one and all to keep the walk going for the 18 hours.

The Shepparton Relay for Life hosted 110 teams and raised $335,000 for the fight against cancer.

There are some photos in the album to take a look.

    Today's the day (and night)

The girls are all set to being their walk at 6 pm tonight.

The weather has not been very settled over the past few days but the thunderstorms seem to have gone for the time being.

If tonight's weather turned out to be anything like last Thursday's, then the walk would have been exciting indeed - the girls would have been dodging lightning bolts!

The plan is to have some photos online in the morning after visiting the girls later tonight to see how they're progressing.

Off and running... and training for the walk

The Waranga Memorial Hospital Relay for Life team has exceeded its own expectations by already raising $5 100 with donations from local schools still to come in

The movie night at Echuca was extremely well attended, despite the cold weather, with $1 400 being raised.

The trivia night was also very well attened and raised a further $2 500. An enjoyable night was had with the Rushworth Community House table winning on the night (by a mere one point).

Many donations received from businesses in Kyabram, Girgarre, Stanhope and Rushworth enabled a large goods and services auction which contributed to this fantastic total.

Individual donations from the local community has been overwhelming, totalling $1 200. Thank you to all.

By raising $5 000, the Waranga Campus team can be nominated to have a research award named after it. The funds will then be directed towards a specific research project nominated by the team.

Well done to everybody on the Waranga Campus team - the goal has been achieved.

Now the aim is to get fit - to do all the walking.

Further donations are welcome until October 14.
    September 08

    Fund total reached

The Movie Night and Trivia Night events have helped the team reach their target of $5,000 raised for Cancer Victoria.

Thanks to the many sponsors of the Trivia Night auctions and prizes.

There aren't any further major fund-raising events planned before the walk on Saturday and Sunday, 22 and 23 October.

However, the team still has donation boxes placed in businesses and organisations (including Waranga Memorial Hospital) in the local towns so donate a gold coin or more if you see one.

Rushworth Community House has a donation box so when you drop in, drop a few coins in the box.

    Trivia night a success

The Trivia Night held on the evening of Friday August 26 was a very enjoyable night for the many who took part.

There were approximately 120 people at tables of ten contesting the Grand Prize for overall winner of the night. The winning table scraped in by one point after ten rounds of ten questions.

As well, each table had to answer questions on music, dates and acronyms.

As well, there was a series of auctions of products and services gratiously donated by local businesses and most of these were fiercely contested. Funds raised from these auctions add to the overall fundraising effort of the team to contribute towards funding Cancer Victoria in the fight against cancer.
    August 14

    Fund raising effort

The team has at this stage raised about $1,500 towards their contribution to the Relay for Life fundraising effort.

The movie night at Echuca was very successful and the next major effort is the Trivia Night on Friday August 26 so get together with friends to make a table. Cost is only $10 per adult, $5 for children. There are great prizes with lots of fun activities during the night.

Remember that there are donation boxes placed at various places in local towns. So if you're unable to attend the Trivia Night, at least donate some of your loose coins to a worthy cause.

    Movie night success

The Monster-in-Law movie night at Echuca was very enjoyable and a great success in raising funds for the team's participation in the Relay for Life.

Funds raised so far are touching $1,500 - a great effort!
    July 30
